WVU in the News: WVU expert participates in subcommittee hearing

WASHINGTON, D.C.-(WTAP) A Senate subcommittee hearing examining the opioid epidemic featured an expert from West Virginia University on addiction.

The director of WVU's addictions center, Dr. James Berry, appeared before the subcommittee at the invitation of U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito.

The senator says Berry told the group it's a problem in many ways, and while it's treatable, a long-term solution is needed-in terms of funding and what are the best solutions.

"He talked about medication-assisted treatment as being very critical toward stopping the deaths from overdose," Capito says, "and getting someone on a path to wellness."

Congress in 2018 passed bi-partisan legislation addressing the issue, but Sen. Capito says a solution will take a long time, with lawmakers, professionals and the public working on it.
