WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center introduces monthly stroke support group

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – The Stroke Committee of WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center has introduced a support group aimed at offering comradery and educational resources for stroke survivors and their caregivers.

These free, monthly support sessions allow stroke survivors to join together to learn more about the disease and the actions they can take to support their physical and emotional health. Community members caring for a stroke survivor are also encouraged to attend.

“This group will give stroke patients and their caregivers a safe space to discuss the challenges and successes of the disease,” Barbara Sherman, system director of quality for Berkeley and Jefferson Medical Centers, said. “Each session will feature education about strokes, including risk factors and ongoing care. We also plan to have hospital staff present to help identify resources for patients who may need additional care.”

The Stroke Support Group meets the third Monday of each month from 6 – 7 p.m. in Berkeley Medical Center’s Meeting Room 1. Apoorv Prasad, M.D., stroke neurologist, will join the group at the July 15 meeting to share information and take questions.
