WVU School of Medicine announces new internal medicine residency program and academic department hosted at Eastern Campus

The West Virginia University School of Medicine has received Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education approval for a new internal medicine residency program that will be hosted on the Eastern Campus.

Beginning with the inaugural class in July 2025, the WVU School of Medicine Eastern Internal Medicine Residency Program will accept six residents per year. Throughout the three-year curriculum, residents will be exposed to in-depth internal medicine training and a full complement of specialty practices. The program also features four unique signature programs, each aimed at addressing major health concerns in West Virginia and the surrounding region.

Ryan McCarthy, M.D.

The program will become the first ACGME-accredited residency to be primarily hosted at Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg and is led by associate professor and residency program director Ryan McCarthy, M.D.

“The new residency program is a tremendous investment in the health of our community,” Dr. McCarthy said. “This program will provide excellent care in and out of the hospital, and reflects our commitment to try and meet the medical needs of the Eastern Panhandle. I am excited to lead an incredible team as we develop a world-class training program in Martinsburg."

Emma Eggleston, M.D., MPH

The program will be housed in the Department of Internal Medicine Eastern Division, under the leadership of WVU Health Sciences Associate Vice President for Community Health Innovation Emma Eggleston, M.D., MPH, who led the application for residency slots from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid and subsequent development of the residency program.

“The addition of this residency program has been many years in the making, and I’m delighted to see it coming to fruition as we embark on an exciting new chapter for our campus,” Dr. Eggleston said. “We have assembled a talented multidisciplinary team led by Dr. McCarthy and supported by our outstanding faculty of physicians who will guide our residents on their journey to become exceptional internal medicine doctors in an inclusive and welcoming learning environment.”

Richard Thomas, M.D., D.D.S.

The program will join the Rural Family Medicine Residency Program as the second ACGME-accredited residency program hosted at the School of Medicine’s Eastern Campus.

“For nearly two decades, the School of Medicine’s Eastern Campus has served as a beacon for the Eastern Panhandle community by providing crucial care to patients in need and implementing a unique community-based medicine curriculum for our students and trainees,” said Richard Thomas, M.D., D.D.S., WVU Eastern Campus dean. “We’re excited to continue to build on our existing great programs and respond to the increasing demand for specialty-trained providers in our state.”
