WVU School of Medicine Charleston Campus names Campbell associate vice president and dean

The West Virginia University School of Medicine Charleston Campus named James Campbell, M.D., FACP, as the associate vice president and dean, effective August 1.

Dr. Campbell has served in the role in an interim capacity since September.

“The Charleston Campus has been my academic home for the entirety of my career, and I am honored to have been given the opportunity to lead this campus,” Campbell said. “The past year serving in the interim role as dean has been the most fulfilling of my career, and I am excited to continue that journey.”

He serves in various leadership roles for the School of Medicine and with the Charleston Campus’ partner hospital, Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC).

In addition to his new role, Campbell will also maintain his position as chair within the Charleston Campus’s Department of Internal Medicine.  Additionally, he currently serves as chief of staff for CAMC.

He has served in the campus’s Departments of Surgery and Internal Medicine throughout his career, which has spanned ambulatory, inpatient, vascular and perioperative medicine. He was named chair of Internal Medicine in 2021.

“Dr. Campbell’s enthusiasm for the future of the Charleston Campus is shared not only by our medical students and alumni, but our friends in the Charleston area and across the state,” Clay Marsh, M.D., chancellor and executive dean for WVU Health Sciences, said.

Campbell joined the WVU faculty after completing his residency in Internal Medicine at CAMC in 2006. He earned his M.D., master’s and undergraduate degree from Marshall University.

He is board-certified in internal medicine and is a member of the American College of Physicians and the Alliance for Internal Medicine.

The WVU Charleston Campus is a regional campus of the School of Medicine where nearly one-third of third- and fourth-year medical students complete their training through an affiliation with CAMC.
