Weekly Conferences

Cardiology Grand Rounds - Cardiology fellows and staff gather for one hour to cover a variety of topics in cardiology: diseases, testing, current guidelines, changes in recommendations, as well a long list of topics recommended by the ACGME.

Interventional Cardiology Grand Rounds - Topics relevant to interventional and non-interventional cardiologists who refer patients to them. Scheduled on a six month basis in order to cover all relevant topics, including, approaches, common complications, pharmacology, as well as new technologies and techniques.

Echo/CT Conference - A series of ongoing lectures given by the director of the echo department. This echo course teaches fellows how to appropriately read and interpret echocardiograms. Presents with various normal and abnormal findings and clinical correlation to these findings.

Nuclear Conference - The prepares non-interventional cardiologists for reading in interpreting nuclear imaging (stress tests, myocardial profusion scans) and helps prepare those interested in board certification for nuclear certification. Provides complete course for prep for these exams. Our program boasts a 98% pass rate for those who attend this lecture and go on to take their nuclear boards.

Clinical Case Conference - Following Interventional Grand Rounds, this weekly conference reviews all cases that occur in the Cath and EP labs. This includes complications in diagnostic and interventional cases, and a review of hemodynamics of left and right heart caths. Combined with the CT Surgery department, it also reviews the cases referred for surgical intervention.

Bi-Weekly Conferences

EP Conference - Occurs twice monthly. Lecture given by the EP staff, who review a wide variety of EP concepts. This ranges from EKG interpretation (including ventricle and atrial arrhythmia), cardiac conduction block, to a review EP studies and interpretations of intercoronary leads. This also gives non-interventional cardiologists a basic understanding of EP problems in the coronary and cardiac systems.

Monthly Conferences

Quality Assurance Conference- This monthly conference includes fellows, faculty, nursing, and all staff who provide cardiac services at the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute.  This conference ensures that the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute continues to function in educational and efficient manner. Changes and suggestions for improvement are discussed and in an open forum format.

M&M - Occurs following the QA Conference. This is a review of all CCU moralities from each month. This allows for a review of cases to improve systems as well as assign understanding of the outcomes and things that can be improved to better serve our patients.

Journal Club - This monthly meeting allows discussion of late breaking clinical trials, changes in the spectrum of practice, and landmark studies to ensure that staff and fellows remain on the cutting edge of current practice guidelines and techniques.

Research Conference - A monthly meeting to review current, ongoing involvement in clinical trials; discuss process of individual and group research projects; and report back on recent publications that fellows and staff have been involved in. This is an opportunity to receive input and advice, as well as review articles being considered for submission.

Continuing Medical Education

The WVU Heart and Vascular Institute provides CME credits for Cardiology Grand Rounds and Interventional Cardiology Grand Rounds.  The West Virginia University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The WVU Office of CME designates this live activity for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
