The West Virginia Healthcare Safety, Quality and Experience Improvement Research Day, also known as the QI Fair, is designed to highlight the continuous efforts of doctors, staff, residents, fellows, students and researchers to improve outcomes for our patients and their families.

This research fair is hosted by the WVU School of MedicineWVU Medicine and WVU Health Sciences and provides a platform for WVU healthcare workers and trainees to prepare and present oral and poster presentations focused on improving outcomes for patients and communities.

With more than 70 posters, 10 oral presentations and three speakers from across the WVU Medicine system, there’s a true opportunity to learn about topics relevant to your expertise.

Michael Edmond, M.D., MPH, MPA, MBA

Dr. Edmond is the Chief Medical Officer of WVU Medicine, University Health Associates and System Medical Group, and Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs at the WVU School of Medicine. Prior to coming to WVU, he was the Chief Quality Officer and Associate Chief Medical Officer for University of Iowa Health Care and Clinical Professor of Infectious Diseases at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. He also previously served as the Richard P. Wenzel Professor of Internal Medicine, Chair of the Division of Infectious Diseases, and Hospital Epidemiologist at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. He is a graduate of the West Virginia University School of Medicine (MD), the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health (MPH), the Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University (MPA), and the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business (MBA). He was a resident and chief resident in Internal Medicine at West Virginia University Hospitals. He then completed a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and a fellowship in Hospital Epidemiology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Dr. Edmond’s scholarly focus has been on the epidemiology of healthcare-associated infections and the public policy implications of infection prevention. He has published 450 papers, abstracts and book chapters.

Catherine Kreatsoulas, MSc., Ph.D.

Dr. Catherine Kreatsoulas is a distinguished academic instructor and research scientist whose interdisciplinary career harmonizes the arts and sciences. While beginning with a performance degree in classical piano from the Royal Conservatory of Music, University of Toronto, curiosity led her to the sciences. She has degrees in Forensic Sciences, Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics and a doctorate in Health Research Methodology. A Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Kreatsoulas furthered her methodologic expertise, completing post-doctoral studies in social epidemiology and causal inference at Harvard University. Dr. Kreatsoulas is published in high-impact medical journals, including JAMA and Annals of Internal Medicine, and her research findings have informed the latest Guidelines of the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology for the Evaluation of Chest Pain. Her research is centered on optimizing and blending methodologies to illuminate health insights at the patient, societal, or hospital-systems levels. As an educator, Dr. Kreatsoulas has spent over a decade teaching various courses, including statistics for quality improvement at the Harvard School of Public Health, mentoring students and healthcare professionals to enhance care, safety, and efficiency through data. Her work extends beyond academia into consulting, where she partners with hospitals, healthcare organizations, and research teams to teach, design, and implement transformative quality improvement initiatives. Whether unraveling data, mentoring students, or performing music, Dr. Kreatsoulas finds beauty in this complex interplay, uniting the human experience with the precision of science to improve lives.

Michael Stevens, MD, MPH, FSHEA, FIDSA, FACP

Michael Stevens, MD, MPH, FSHEA, FIDSA, FACP is a Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases. He is WVU Health System's System Healthcare Epidemiologist and is the Medical Co-Director for the Virginia Infection Prevention Training Center. Dr. Stevens’ research interests focus on pragmatic approaches to infection prevention. He has contributed to over 100 research abstracts presented at national and international conferences and has authored over 130 peer-reviewed papers. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America.
