Message from the Division Chief

Our mission within the Division of General Internal Medicine is to provide comprehensive, compassionate, evidence-based care to the people of West Virginia and the surrounding states. We see patients at every stage of their healthcare journey — from preventive visits and chronic disease management in our primary care clinics to more focused concerns through the Medical Weight Management Clinic. Our outpatient services bring multidisciplinary support through the collaboration of physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, nurses, dieticians, social workers, and other support staff. Our inpatient team partners with subspecialty services, care management, and inpatient staff to guide patients through some of their most challenging times. The Transitions of Care Clinic serves as a vital bridge for patients moving from hospital to home, ensuring a smooth and supported recovery process. All of these services work together to provide our patients with the best possible care and outcomes.

Dr. Andrea Labus HeadshotThe Division of General Internal Medicine is proud to support and welcome learners, colleagues, and prospective faculty. Our goal is to foster a positive environment for learning, growth, and the development of clinical and professional skills. No matter the area of interest — whether research, clinical care, education, faculty development, or communication — we are committed to helping each individual reach their fullest potential and make a meaningful impact on those around them.

In the ever-evolving landscape of medicine, our division continues to grow to meet the needs of both our patients and providers. The WVU Medicine Medical Weight Management Clinic remains the first and only center in West Virginia with advanced accreditation in obesity medicine. In 2025, it expanded into a new, state-of-the-art facility designed to accommodate more patients and offer an even broader range of services. The Transitions of Care Clinic continues to expand ensuring patients receive comprehensive post-hospitalization care through the collaboration of physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, social workers, and nursing staff.

Supporting our providers is equally important to us. We are committed to implementing advanced technologies that streamline workflows and enhance efficiency — including the use of artificial intelligence tools such as ambient listening devices and patient messaging support. Additionally, we focus on professional development opportunities and outpatient team-based care models to strengthen our clinical environment and support faculty well-being.

Our division is united by a shared commitment to education, research, quality improvement, professional growth, and the advancement of patient care. We proudly call West Virginia home and understand the unique culture, values, and needs of our state. This connection allows us to provide care that is deeply personal and clinically excelling.

It is our privilege to serve the people of West Virginia and the Appalachian region. We look forward to continuing to advance healthcare, foster innovation, and support our patients, colleagues, and communities through our work.
