Typical Rotation Schedule
Neurology Residency
Rotations
Rotations are subject to change, but we strive to maintain a balance between inpatient and outpatient neurology exposure spread evenly over the advanced three years. Intern rotations are on a monthly basis. Residents in their PGY2-4 years rotate in half month blocks with a 4-plus-2 style. This means that they have a month of inpatient neurology (e.g. Stroke, Wards, Consults, NCCU, EMU, or pediatric) followed by a half-month of subspecialty clinic or elective.
PGY 1
- 4 months of Neurology rotations to include Neurology Wards, Neurology Consults, Stroke Service, and Neurocritical Care.
- 4 months of Internal Medicine Wards
- 1 month Emergency Medicine
- 3 months of Electives to include cardiology consults, supportive care, neuroradiology
PGY 2
- 5 months of inpatient wards (Neurology Wards, Stroke, and Consult; includes 2 blocks of night float)
- 1 month of Neurocritical Care
- 1 month of Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
- 1 month of Child Neurology
- 2 months of Subspecialty Clinic
- 2 months of electives
PGY 3
- 5 months of inpatient wards (Neurology Wards, Stroke, and Consult; includes 2 blocks of night float)
- 1 month of Neuro Critical Care Unit
- 1 month of Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
- 1 month of Child Neurology
- 2 months of Subspecialty Clinic
- 2 months of electives
PGY 4
- 3 months of inpatient wards (Neurology Wards, Stroke, and Consult; includes 2 blocks of night float)
- 1 month of Neuro Critical Care Unit
- 1 month of Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
- 1 month of Child Neurology
- 1 month of Psychiatry
- 2 months of Subspecialty Clinic
- 3 months of elective
Elective Rotations: EEG, EMG, Movement disorders, Headache medicine, Neurocognitive/Memory, Sleep medicine, Sports neurology, Teleneurology, Neurocritical Care (NCCU), Palliative Care, Neuroradiology, Neuro interventional radiology (Neuro IR), Clinical Informatics, Neuro Opthamology, Research, Education elective, and Creative writing (eligibility requirements).
Ward Rotations (general neurology/stroke) - Each team with 3 junior residents, 1 senior resident. There is an additional night float resident from 8:00pm to 8:00am. Day calls are from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
Consult Service – take consults Mon-Fri only from 7:00am – 4:30pm. No weekend call or after hours call.
NCCU Service: staffed by both advanced practice providers (APPs) and residents from neurology, neurosurgery, and anesthesia. Residents staff the unit from 6:00am – 4:00pm and rotate on late call. The unit is staffed by APPs overnight.
Continuity Clinic begins in the PGY2, 3 half-day clinics per week during ambulatory and elective rotations. 1 half-day clinic per week during EMU rotation. Add on clinics as necessary. This is an excellent opportunity to learn interesting common and uncommon neurological conditions in an outpatient setting.
Outpatient Subspecialty Clinic - begins in the PGY2 year. Opportunity to rotate with subspecialty trained faculty - in an outpatient setting - general neurology, stroke, headache, epilepsy, neuromuscular, neuroimmunology, cognitive discorders, Botox injections for spasticity, headache and movement disorder.
Night Float - PGY2, PGY3, and PGY4 residents will complete 10-12 weeks of a night float rotation during their training. The night float team consists of a junior and senior resident. Night float rotations are 2 weeks in duration with one night off per week as specified by the ACGME. Night float begins at 8pm when the resident receives handoff from the stroke and general neurology services and presents admitted patients at 8am to the accepting team. In addition, residents will be assigned night call during their elective months to cover when the night float resident’s weekly night off.
Education Track - Education track is a longitudinal program available to WVU neurology residents focused on neurology education and teaching. It is geared towards residents interested in pursuing education in academic settings. The Education Track encompasses the majority of the residency duration, so applications are due in the PGY1 for the program to begin during PGY2.
