About Us

Letter from the program director:

The Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Program at WVU Medicine Children's Heart Center is seeking to fill a position for a first-year fellow starting July 1, 2025. This three-year ACGME-accredited program provides comprehensive education and training in all aspects of pediatric cardiology, preparing fellows for successful careers in both academic and clinical practice.

Our growing Division of Pediatric Cardiology supports our patient population at both the Children’s Hospital in Morgantown, WV, and throughout the state via an extensive pediatric cardiology outreach program. Fellows will experience the spectrum of pediatric cardiology, including fetal cardiology, general pediatric cardiology, advanced imaging, interventional catheterization, electrophysiology (noninvasive and invasive), adult congenital heart disease (ACHD), pediatric cardiac anesthesia, and preventative cardiology.

Fellows will train within West Virginia’s only dedicated pediatric cardiac program, housed within WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital, a tertiary care referral center for West Virginia, Western Maryland, Southwestern Pennsylvania, and Southeastern Ohio.  WVU Medicine Children’s offers a comprehensive training environment for pediatric cardiology fellows, featuring a dedicated Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) staffed by experts in managing complex congenital and acquired heart diseases. As the only pediatric cardiothoracic surgery program in West Virginia, our team performs a full range of procedures, from neonatal single ventricle repairs to adult congenital heart disease surgeries. Fellows gain hands-on experience in our hybrid EP and interventional catheterization lab, learning cutting-edge techniques in electrophysiology and catheter-based interventions. Our robust ECMO program, supported by dedicated pediatric perfusionists, enhances care for both cardiac and non-cardiac conditions. Training takes place in our new state-of-the-art, 150-bed Children’s Hospital, which includes dedicated pediatric cardiac procedural rooms.

Our fellowship provides progressive responsibility in patient care over three years, with increasing autonomy in managing complex cardiac cases. Fellows will have the opportunity to engage with our clinical research and quality improvement committees as well as have the potential to be involved in multidisciplinary collaborations. Fellows can participate in helping to tailor a burgeoning program to their educational and aspirational needs.

Interested applicants should email their CV and a personal statement to me (alex.verhoeven@wvumedicine.org) or Dr. Udassi (jai.udassi1@hsc.wvu.edu).
