How to Apply
The West Virginia University Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is a categorical program and participates exclusively in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). All applications must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We do not accept applications outside of ERAS or offer pre-match positions.
Application Deadline: The deadline to submit your completed ERAS application is October 31st.
Required Application Materials: A complete application consists of the following documents:
- ERAS Common Application Form
- Personal Statement
- Official Medical School Transcript
- Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE)
- Three (3) Letters of Recommendation
- Official USMLE or COMLEX Transcripts
Examination Policy: Applicants must provide proof of passing scores on USMLE Step 1/COMLEX Level 1 and USMLE Step 2CK/COMLEX Level 2. While there is no minimum score requirement for these examinations, performance is considered as one component of our holistic review process.
Information for International Medical Graduates (IMGs)
We welcome applications from highly qualified international medical graduates who meet the eligibility requirements of our institution and the West Virginia Board of Medicine.
ECFMG Certification: Applicants must be certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). Proof of ECFMG eligibility for a J-1 visa is required by the time of ranking in the NRMP.

Recency of Graduation: All applicants should be within four years of graduation from medical school at the time of the Match.
Clinical Experience: While not a strict requirement, relevant clinical experience in the United States is viewed favorably.

We seek to identify candidates who not only have a strong academic record but also demonstrate a genuine commitment to the principles of physiatry, excellent communication skills, and the personal qualities of compassion, integrity, and resilience. The Department does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, or veteran status.
