The West Virginia University Rural Maternal Child Health Fellowship is a non-accredited, non-traditional ACGME fellowship program. Our central goal is to prepare family medicine physicians to practice advanced obstetrical and newborn care in a rural community setting.

The fellowship aims to train physicians to competently perform cesarean sections and supply support to both obstetricians and certified nurse midwives. Our focus is not solely surgical, but also to sustain and strengthen maternity services in rural communities.

The curriculum includes practical didactic components and supervised rural experiences including direct deliveries and perinatal rural community outreach.

The fellows will serve as junior faculty mentors for our Rural Family Medicine residents in a continued effort to supply the best care for our community.

With the support of the West Virginia Division of Higher Education Policy Commission and the West Virginia Perinatal Partnership, we have been able to train family medicine physicians in advanced obstetrical care which prepares them for full-spectrum family medicine practice in rural or underserved areas.
