Getting Started in Research

The Department of Urology is deeply committed to fostering a strong culture of inquiry, innovation, and scholarly development for medical students, residents, and all learners interested in research. We view every project as a collaborative partnership, and our faculty are dedicated to guiding new investigators from idea generation through study completion, presentation, and publication. To support this mission, we maintain quarterly research meetings where residents and faculty share progress, develop new concepts, and invite motivated medical students to participate directly in ongoing projects.

Our department offers comprehensive research infrastructure, including access to institutional statisticians, full IRB and regulatory support, and guidance through the Office of Sponsored Programs, Research Compliance, and other essential resources for human and animal research. Funding mechanisms are available to help launch and sustain high-quality studies, ensuring that learners can pursue meaningful scholarly work without unnecessary barriers.

We strongly encourage residents to present or publish at least one abstract, poster, or manuscript during their training, and we back that commitment with financial support. Trainees are supported to attend and present at local, regional, and national conferences, reinforcing the importance of academic engagement and contributing to the broader urologic community. Our goal is to provide the mentorship, resources, and opportunities needed to help every learner grow as a clinician–scientist and make a lasting impact on the field.
