Department of Neurology Assistant Professor named 2021 Clinician of the Year

West Virginia University’s Eastern Campus medical students have voted Assistant Professor and Neurologist Apoorv Prasad, M.D., the 2021 Eastern Campus Clinician of the Year.

“Working at WVU Eastern is my first attending job out of my training and I feel incredibly honored to be awarded this title so early in my career,” Dr. Prasad said. “I truly believe that teaching medical students has made me a better neurologist and has ensured that I never stop learning new things myself.”

At the conclusion of each academic year, Eastern Campus third-year medical students vote for the physician they believe embodies the ideal teaching physician, with all of the attributes of an outstanding educator in the clinical setting.

Student nomination forms cited Prasad’s passion, personal feedback, one-on-one assistance and approachability as reasons he deserved to be awarded this title.

Prasad said he credits the award to all of the teachers he has had during his training, noting that he has tried to incorporate all of their positive attributes into his approach to patient care and teaching.

“Our goal is to help prepare medical students to be the best medical professionals they can be,” Associate Dean for Student Services Rosie Lorenzetti, M.D., said. “Having instructors who are very clear on their expectations for students and work to guide their learning with patients, such as Dr. Prasad, is a large part of what makes us so successful in that goal.”

Prasad began working at WVU in 2018 following the completion of his fellowship training at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

In addition to his role as an assistant professor, Prasad was named Clerkship Director for the Department of Neurology in 2019 and Stroke Medical Director for the Berkeley Medical Center in 2021.
