Important Dates

  • PEDS Grand Rounds is broadcast from Morgantown every Wednesday 8-9 am. The first Wednesday is at the board room on the 8th floor of BMC.  Remaining sessions held at the ED conference room in ED of BMC.  If you are on a Pediatrics Week, please plan to attend.
  • Tumor Board – Thur., May 16th, 12-1pm, in BMC 8th Floor Classroom.  Topic: “Tubular Adenoma” presented by Dr. Sam Wanko (Hem/Onc) and Dr. Tina Ang-Rabanes, MD (Pathology).
  • Health & Resiliency Program Yoga (formerly Karma Yoga) – Wednesdays, May 8th-Dec. 18th, 5:00-7:00pm, in Eastern HSC Mountaineer Room.  Free sessions for employees and medical students to promote wellness.  Supplies are limited; if you have yoga equipment, you are encouraged to bring it to the classes.
  • Surgical M&M – Next M & M in Jun.  No student presenters. 
  • Help2Quit Program – Thur., May 16th, 5:30-7:30pm, in Eastern HSC Mountaineer Room.  Educational program focused on providing information for healthcare professionals to help pregnant patients with smoking cessation and to discuss in-state resources to reduce smoking during and post-pregnancy.  Program will feature a 4-physician panel.  Dinner included.   • Grand Rounds – Mon., May 20th, 12:00-1:00pm, in BMC 8th Floor Classroom.  Topic: “A Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Critical Communication in the Medical Context” presented by Susan Wieczorek, PhD – Assistant Professor, Communication Department, University of Pittsburgh.
  • Community Mini-Med School – Tue., May 21st, 7pm, in Eastern HSC Auditorium.  Topic: “Brain Food: Food, Movement, and Brain Health” presented by Dr. Apoorv Prasad, WVU Medicine MedCHEFS and Metabolic Center Faculty.  Food demos/tastings offered by medical students.
  • Evidence Based Medicine Review – Wed., May 22nd, 12-1pm, in BMC 8th Floor Classroom.  Topic: “Management of Sepsis in Adults” presented by Dr. Matthew Simmons (Infectious Disease) and Kalindi Patel, PharmD.

Volunteer/Community Service Opportunities

  • Relay for Life Volunteers Needed – Berkeley County: June 1st, 12pm-6am, at Martinsburg High School; Jefferson County: June 22nd, 6pm-6am, at Jefferson High School.  Assistance needed in a variety of areas, including setup/tear-down, registration, accounting, silent auction, and luminarias.  To volunteer or for additional information, contact Dana DeJarnett: dana.dejarnett@wvumedicine.org.
  • Sports Physicals – June 4th, 5th, and 6th, 5:30-8:30 pm, location TBA.  Medical students needed to assist Dr. Cathy Funk and other physicians with providing sports physicals to high school athletes.  This is a great service to the community and has helped to bring health issues to light.
  • Volunteers for Running Events – Assistance needed with running events coordinated by Dr. Mark Cucuzzella. Fri./Sat., May 17th & 18th10th Annual Harpers Ferry Half Marathon.  Volunteers needed to help on Friday with course prep from 8amuntil dark, and for race support (including medical) on Saturday, 7am-12pm.  For additional information or to volunteer, contact Dr. Cucuzzella: mark.cucuzzella@wvumedicine.org.
  • Stepping Stones/Good Samaritan Free Clinic – Volunteers needed every Wednesday at 5pm and first Tuesday of each month at 5pm.  New location: 601 S. Raleigh Street, Martinsburg.  To volunteer or for additional information: Ayita Verna (agverna@mix.wvu.edu).
  • Fun Volunteer Opportunity – Jefferson County Community Ministries Food Pantry, 238 W. Washington Street, Charles Town.  3rdSaturday of each month, beginning at 10am.  Volunteers will work with Dr. Maddie Humerick, Chef Scott, and others to assist the food pantry patrons to improve their nutrition status with monthly cooking demonstrations.   • Volunteers Needed – Chronic illness group and their support system is looking for speakers to give 45-minute presentations on the first and third Tuesday of each month.  Meetings held 9-10:30am in the Dorothy McCormack Center, 2nd floor conference room.  Topics can be health-related, inspirational, supportive, educational about coping mechanisms, sharing a story/experience, or a fun activity.  Contact Debbie Maiorano at 540-535-5145 or deborahmm@aol.com if interested in volunteering.

  • VSAS Transcripts – If you need a transcript for VSAS, please contact Eastern Student Services office.
  • NAU MODULE: Be sure to complete your required IV start on a patient in the hospital under nurse supervision.  Go to either Same-Day Surgery or Emergency Department at BMC to complete this task.
