A planned electrical power outage will occur on the WVU Hospitals (WVUH) campus Sunday, Dec. 15, at 7 a.m. The outage is required to repair faulty equipment on the First Energy main switch supplying electrical power to the campus.

During the outage, which will last eight hours, only "red" critical outlets will have electrical power. Weather conditions could postpone the repair. If the repair goes as planned, the power will be restored at 3 p.m. on Dec. 15.

At 6 a.m. on Dec. 15, a Facilities Engineering crew will start the emergency generators and the electrical loads will be switched over to the emergency gear, similar to a monthly generator test. At that time, the following buildings will be on emergency power:

  • J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital
  • Northeast tower
  • Southeast tower
  • Cancer Center (the original HSC building areas will have normal power)
  • Physician Office Center
  • Chestnut Ridge Center
  • Children’s Hospital

During the outage:

  • Follow your department's emergency plan for electrical power outages to help prepare.
  • The “red” critical outlets will have emergency power. Be sure all patient-related items are plugged into critical outlets.
  • Lighting will be limited to every third fixture in hallways and common areas.
  • Please turn off all office lights, computers, and electrical devices in office areas at the end of business on Friday Dec. 13.
  • Emergency issues should be directed to the Administrator On Call team.
