Service Award applications now open for medical, dental and physician assistant students

Applications are now open for the WVU Institute for Community and Rural Health service award programs.

Medical Student Service Award

Are you a medical school student thinking about practicing in a rural community? Could you use $100,000 to help pay for school? The WVU Institute for Community and Rural Health service program applications for medical students is now open and closes on February 7, 2025. Awards will be made by March 2025. Service program recipients receive $25,000 for each year of commitment for up to 4 years ($100,000 total).

Dental Student Service Award

Are you a fourth-year dental school student thinking about practicing in a rural community? Could you use $50,000 to help pay for school?

The #ICRH service program applications for dental students is now open. The application closes December 13, 2024. Awards will be made by March 2025.

Service program recipients receive $50,000 for a two-year commitment.

Students who are awarded service program funding must sign a contract and practice full-time (32-40 hours per week) for a minimum of one year at an eligible site.

Physician Assistant Rural Health Scholarship Program

Clinical year physician assistant students in the physician assistant studies program (MHS) at the WVU School of Medicine who intend to practice in West Virginia. Selected students will receive a $25,000 scholarship in exchange for a 12-month commitment for full-time work in a rural area of West Virginia. The application closes December 13, 2024.

Students who are awarded service program funding must sign a contract and practice full-time (32-40 hours per week) for a minimum of one year for each year of funding at an eligible site located in a rural and/or underserved area of the state.

Other areas to fulfill obligation requirements will be considered on a case by case basis.

Students are responsible for locating a practice site and must agree to provide services to West Virginia Medicaid and CHIP recipients.
