Wellness

The Behavioral Medicine & Psychiatry residency recognizes that physician trainees are at an increased risk for depression and burnout. In conjunction with our central GME office, we are committed to prioritizing and fostering our resident, fellow, and supervising faculty wellbeing while still ensuring the competency of our trainees. We recognize the importance of physical health, emotional health, social support, and engagement in this endeavor.

Residents are encouraged to establish a non-peer primary care physician and are provided with a list of area PCPs for reference. The Wellness Center offers a variety of facilities and programs, and there is a discounted membership offered at the WVU Rec Center. We plan for enhancing social support and engagement amidst our program through team building exercises, group retreats, and social activities.

Our program has a policy and procedure in place to assist with arranging sick leave when residents are ill.  All incoming interns attend lectures related to the medical professionals’ health program, education about burnout, substance abuse, and mental health. Residents are familiarized with institutional resources to address these concerns. Mentorship is also available to address wellness topics and concerns. Our lecture series includes a variety of wellness topics for further education. We utilize regular surveys and evaluations in order to assess and enhance our wellness programming over time.
