Cardiac Electrophysiology specializes in diseases affecting the electrical system of the heart that cause it to beat too fast or too slow. In addition to causing symptoms, such diseases may predispose to early death. We offer patients medical treatment, minimally invasive catheter-based ablation, access to minimally invasive and robotic surgical ablation, and implantation of various devices (pacemaker, defibrillator).

Fellows can anticipate learning from faculty who evaluated more than 20,000+ patients and performed more than 1,000 procedures across the WVU Medicine system in 2023.

Example procedures through which fellows can learn:

  • Ablation of atrial fibrillation and supraventricular tachycardia
  • Ablation of ventricular tachycardia
  • Cardioverter-defibrillator system implantation, including transvenous, subcutaneous, and substernal systems
  • Pacemaker system implantation, including transvenous and leadless pacemakers
  • Cardiac resynchronization therapies, including left ventricular, bundle of His, and left bundle branch area pacing
  • Transvenous lead management, including complex extraction
