Group of surgeons in operating room performing heart surgery procedure.

West Virginia University would like to welcome you to consider training in Cardiothoracic Surgery. Our 2-year Fellowship is for those who have successfully completed an accredited general surgery residency. The program provides clinical training and didactic education in Adult Cardiac, General Thoracic, and Congenital Heart surgery. Upon successful completion of training, fellows will be allowed to choose careers in Adult Cardiac and General Thoracic Surgery and will eligible to sit for the American Board of Thoracic Surgery qualifying exam.

WVU Ruby Memorial Hospital serves as a tertiary referral center for patients throughout the state. WVU has recently undergone significant facility enhancements including a new $200 M Heart and Vascular Institute. Experienced and nationally-renowned faculty with a track record of clinical success and resident education have been recruited. The current case load has put our institution on track to perform over 700 Cardiac and 800 General Thoracic index cases annually and growing rapidly. Residents will have a robust exposure to innovation and academic opportunities. The institute enrolls in several clinical trials including early feasibility and pivotal trials. The comprehensive research infrastructure established in the institute has resulted in over 80 peer-reviewed publications over the last 18 months.  In addition to a rich operative experience and a complete didactic curriculum, residents will accelerate their learning through our surgical simulation program. Residents can be expected to train in an environment where education is paramount and they will be treated with respect. Trainees will have the support of a full complement of mid-level providers who welcome resident participation and enhance the educational experience.

Thank you for considering WVU to further your training in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. We look forward to hearing from you and wish you the best in your career.

Sincerely,
Jason Lamb, M.D.
Program Director
