Admissions and Scholarship
Application Process
The Rural Scholars Program is searching for medical students who can meet the challenge of practicing primary care in a rural setting. Successful practitioners will develop a unique set of skills and expertise that will significantly impact the delivery of healthcare in an undeserved region.
The demands of the program make the admission very competitive and only two scholarships are offered per year. To be considered applicants must complete an application, submit a personal statement of commitment and letters of support. Potential candidates will interview in person with members of the selection committee.
We have adopted a rolling admissions process. Scholarship recipients are formally recognized at the Departmental and Medical School level in the Spring of each academic year.
Program Scholarship
Funded, in part, through the generosity of the Claude and Stazie Rader Fund of the WVU Family Medicine Foundation, the Rural Scholars Program rewards accepted students with a generous $10,000 stipend that is payable upon completion of the fourth year of medical school. In return, students are committed to continuing their residency training in Family Medicine at WVU Morgantown and beginning practice in West Virginia. Applicant requirements include a strong commitment to rural Family Medicine, demonstrated leadership and scholarship during medical school, strong clinical and interpersonal skills, and a keen understanding of rural culture.
