Application Process
Application for this rotation is through Dr. Melanie Fisher. Copies of your passport and travel insurance will be required. Be sure that your passport is valid more than 6 months after the departure date.
Clinic
There are two rotations for students at the Oman Medical College (OMC).
On the Surgical rotation, students will be exposed to a secondary care hospital of Oman Ministry of Health, serving the needs of the local (Arabic) rural population. The students will familiarize themselves with pre-operative, operative, and post-operative care of surgical patients and be prepared to become competent interns. There will be a full-day orientation to the Omani society, culture, and healthcare, including Islamic perspectives of medical ethics and practice. The students will be paired with a bilingual OMC student to facilitate interaction with monolingual Arabic patients, and will be assigned to a hospital consultant. In the outpatient department the students will work up new cases and discuss patient management with their assigned consultant. In the inpatient department they will work with interns and learn pre- and post-operative care while observing various minor procedures. The students will attend and present in ward rounds, observe and assist in the operating room, and participate in academic activities of OMC's Surgery Department.
On the Family and Community Medicine rotation, students will be exposed to primary referral clinics of Oman Ministry of Health, serving the diverse needs of the local (Arabic) rural population. The students will develop clinical skills and self-confidence through a clinical rotation, and be able to demonstrate evidence-based medical knowledge to maximize patient care (history taking, physical examination, and data synthesis). They will gain practice-based learning with good interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and system-based practice. The students will attend all presentations and CME within the department, rotate to dermatology clinic (once per week) to learn the common skin problems in Oman, and enhance group presentation skills via weekly interactive presentations. There will be a full-day orientation to Omani society, culture, and healthcare, including Islamic perspectives of medical ethics and practice. The students will be paired with a bilingual OMC student to facilitate interaction with monolingual Arabic patients in this fully supervised clinical outpatient rotation. There will be a preparation and presentation of history, physical examination, and management plan, as the students participate and present in interdepartmental sessions.
