Pre-Medical Pathway Programs

The following pathway programs were established for select undergraduate students at West Virginia University and our partner universities to provide exposure to the medical profession and mentorship through the application process. There are several dedicated pre-medical programs at WVU to prepare students for an MD in addition to the undergraduate offerings in the School of Medicine and University overall. 

Students who enter our pathway programs must express an overall desire to become a physician and be interested in the WVU School of Medicine as their top enrollment school. West Virginia Pathway Programs

West Virginia University Pre-Medical Track 

Established in September 2015, the WVU Pre-Medical Track is an early assurance program for undergraduate students enrolled at WVU who wish to attend the WVU School of Medicine. Students accepted into the Pre-Medical Track will receive counseling through the office of admissions and will be able to participate in exclusive workshops at the WVU School of Medicine. Those students who complete the requirements of the Pre-Medical Track will be guaranteed an interview with the WVU School of Medicine. This program does not guarantee acceptance.

Application Requirements:

  • Have at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA
  • Have completed at least one full year at West Virginia University
  • Be a current student at the West Virginia University

West Virginia University Mountaineer Accelerated Pathway (MAP) to MD Program

The WVU Mountaineer Accelerated Pathway (MAP) to the Medical Degree (MD) Program helps provide students with a flexible pathway to earn a medical degree at the WVU School of Medicine. Selected students must attend WVU and choose a Health Professions undergraduate major in the WVU School of Medicine.

Once in MAP, students must apply through AMCAS to medical school. This program guarantees an interview if the MAP requirements are met. Acceptance to the MD program is not guaranteed. Medical school tuition will be supported with an annual scholarship of at least $10,000 a year or higher provided the student remains in good academic and professional standing.

MedSTEP

Established in April 2003, MedSTEP is a joint partnership between Shepherd University and the WVU School of Medicine. MedSTEP students will be mentored by our staff and faculty from the WVU School of Medicine Eastern Campus. Those students who complete the requirements of the Pre-Medical Track will be guaranteed an interview with the WVU School of Medicine. This program does not guarantee acceptance.

Application Requirements:

  • Have at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA
  • Completed at least one full year at Shepherd University
  • Enrolled at Shepherd University

Pennsylvania Pathway Programs

Grove City College Pre-Medical Track 

Established in June 2019, the WVU Pre-Medical Track at Grove City College (GCC) is an early assurance program for undergraduate students of GCC.  Students accepted into the Pre-Medical Track will receive counseling through the Office of Admissions. Those students who complete the requirements of the Pre-Medical Track will be guaranteed an interview with the WVU School of Medicine. This program does not guarantee acceptance.

Application Requirements:

  • Have at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA
  • Completed at least one full year at Grove City College
  • Enrolled at Grove City College

Waynesburg University Pre-Medical Track 

Established in September 2014, the WVU Pre-Medical Track at Waynesburg University is an early assurance program for undergraduate students. North Carolina Pathway Program

Meredith College Pre-Medical Track

Established in March 2023, the WVU Pre-Medical Track at Meredith College is an early assurance program for undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students. Students accepted into the Pre-Medical Track will receive counseling through the office of admissions. Those students who complete the requirements of the Pre-Medical Track will be guaranteed an interview with the WVU School of Medicine. This program does not guarantee acceptance.

Application Requirements for Undergraduate Students:

  • 3.5 cumulative GPA
  • Completed at least one full year at Meredith College
  • Enrolled at Meredith College

Application Requirements for Post-Baccalaureate Students:

  • 3.6 cumulative GPA after the first semester of the post-bac program
  • Enrolled at Meredith College

To apply:

  • Post-bac students will submit an unofficial transcript at the end of the first semester
