What’s Happening – Morgantown

WELLNESS CLASSES. Yoga for the Professional Student. Classes offered at 3pm in Room G278. Register online.

BWELL APPOINTMENTS OFFERED for Medical students. Confidential, private appointments for initial assessments, triage and brief interventions for students experiencing life stress, mental illness or problems with alcohol or substance use. OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICPATE IN RESEARCH STUDY led by Dr. Hashmi and supported by students. The goal is to better assess the interest, education, and expectations in family planning, reproductive health and counseling among first and second year medical students at WVU. Access the survey here.

CULINARY TRACK There is one opening in the culinary track for a current first year students. If you are interested, the application is online and make sure you mark that you are a current first year student. Please email Michelle Alder to let her know you have filled out an application. Email Dr. Lorenzetti with questions regarding the track. There is a paid summer externship for 3 weeks with housing provided in the Eastern Division area (Harpers Ferry) from June 11 to June 28.

PEDS Grand Rounds is broadcast from Morgantown every Wednesday 8-9 am. The first Wednesday is at the board room on the 8th floor of BMC. Remaining sessions held at the ED conference room in ED of BMC. If you are on a Pediatrics Week, please plan to attend.

“Narcan Talk” – Mon., Apr. 22nd, 5:30-6:30pm, in Eastern HSC Auditorium. Community educational discussion presented by Dr. John Aldis to provide information regarding rules, procedures, and use of naloxone (Narcan).

Health & Resiliency Program Yoga (formerly Karma Yoga) – Wednesdays, Jan. 9th through May 1st, 5:30-6:30pm, in Eastern HSC Mountaineer Room. Free sessions for employees and medical students to promote wellness. Supplies are limited; if you have yoga equipment, you are encouraged to bring it to the classes.

Medical M&M – Fri., May 3rd, 12-1pm, in BMC 8th Floor Classroom. Topic: “Sports Physical in Patients with Eating Disorders: Reaching the Goal or Missing the Mark?” presented by Dr. Jean Someshwar – WVU Medicine Pediatrics.

Volunteer/Community Service Opportunities

Volunteer Judges Needed – Practice Symposium for HSTA students to be held Thurs., April 25th, 3-5pm, at Eastern HSC. If interested in being a judge, please contact Erin Gaertner, Eastern Panhandle HSTA Field Site Coordinator, at erin.gaertner@hsc.wvu.edu.

Truffle Shuffle Volunteer Staff – Needed to assist in first aid tent for 2019 Truffle Shuffle 5K & Kids Fun Run on Sat., April 27th, 7:30-10:30am, on the square in Downtown Martinsburg. To volunteer, contact Dana DeJarnett: dana.dejarnett@wvumedicine.org or 304-264-1287, ext. 31814.

Relay for Life Volunteers Needed – Berkeley County: June 1st, 12pm-6am, at Martinsburg High School; Jefferson County: June 22nd, 6pm-6am, at Jefferson High School. Assistance needed in a variety of areas, including setup/tear-down, registration, accounting, silent auction, and luminarias. Sports Physicals – June 4th, 5th, and 6th, 5:30-8:30pm, location TBA. Medical students needed to assist Dr. Cathy Funk and other physicians with providing sports physicals to high school athletes. This is a great service to the community and has helped to bring health issues to light.

Stepping Stones/Good Samaritan Free Clinic – Volunteers needed every Wednesday at 5pm and first Tuesday of each month at 5pm. New location: 601 S. Raleigh Street, Martinsburg. To volunteer or for additional information: Ayita Verna (agverna@mix.wvu.edu).

Fun Volunteer Opportunity – Jefferson County Community Ministries Food Pantry, 238 W. Washington Street, Charles Town. 3rd Saturday of each month, beginning at 10am. Volunteers will work with Dr. Maddie Humerick, Chef Scott, and others to assist the food pantry patrons to improve their nutrition status with monthly cooking demonstrations. Help needed with setup, tear-down, cooking process, and interacting with patrons. For additional information, contact: Audreanna James, OMS-III (ajames@osteo.wvsom.edu). Volunteers Needed – Chronic illness group and their support system is looking for speakers to give 45-minute presentations on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Meetings held 9-10:30am in the Dorothy McCormack Center, 2nd floor conference room. Topics can be health-related, inspirational, supportive, educational about coping mechanisms, sharing a story/experience, or a fun activity. Graduation Deadlines

May 1st – All graduation requirements must be met. Includes passing scores on Step 2 CS, CK, CPX, 100 hours of community service, and satisfactory evaluations in all 4th year clerkships.

VSAS Transcripts – If you need a transcript for VSAS, please contact Eastern Student Services office.

NAU MODULE: Be sure to complete your required IV start on a patient in the hospital under nurse supervision. Go to either Same-Day Surgery or Emergency Department at BMC to complete this task.
