I personally want to welcome you to the WVU Department of Medicine’s Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the West Virginia University Health Sciences Center and J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital. We are an academic medical center committed to excellence in patient care, medical education and teaching, as well as translational and clinical research.

The division has grown significantly since I started here and will continue to grow to meet the needs of citizens in West Virginia and the surrounding areas of Maryland, Pennsylvania and Ohio. In addition to our existing faculty, we have hired several new faculty and advanced practice professionals to meet the demands of clinical and endoscopic services. Our talented providers, both new and existing, come from different institutions and represent a well-trained group of professionals. We will continue to recruit additional faculty to add to our expertise.

In recent years, we have established a Center for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases as well as a new Center for Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy. Three additional advanced endoscopists have joined our team to provide services for complicated gastrointestinal disorders and pancreato-biliary diseases. Our goal is to manage all aspects of advanced endoscopic procedures so that patients never have to leave the state to obtain specialized care.

Our division now also offers expertise in liver diseases and liver transplantation with the Center for Liver Diseases. With this expansion of services, WVU Medicine is capable of managing all aspects of liver disease with the goal of establishing a liver transplant program in the future.

In addition to our growth in clinical services, we have expanded our GI fellowship program to enhance our academic and educational missions. We will also establish a new fourth year therapeutic endoscopy fellowship in the 2022-2023 academic year.

We are the academic leader in the state and are committed to improving the health of all citizens in West Virginia and surrounding locations. We will continue to make strides in ensuring our division achieves greatness in all areas of clinical care, education and research.

Sincerely,

William R. Hutson, MD, FAASLD, AGAF
Professor of Medicine and Surgery
