Geriatric Medicine
Our mission is to integrate outstanding clinical care and education for people who are coping with multiple medical problems or mental decline and require additional specialized care and assistance. We foster vitality, independence, and resilience throughout the lifespan by promoting optimal physical and brain health. Our clinical providers are specialty trained in aging wellness with attention in early diagnosis and proper treatment and include experts in dementia and chronic diseases. Our investigators research dementia, health disparities and socioeconomic factors related to aging. An overview of the geriatric medicine services is described below:
Inpatient Care
The Division provides care to older patients through inpatient geriatric consults at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital. The service delivers state-of-the art inpatient medical services by highly trained staff with expertise in aging, using an inter-professional team approach.
Outpatient Care
The Division's outpatient practice is located at University Town Center and provides interdisciplinary geriatric primary and specialized medical care. Members of the team include internists, geriatricians, a gero-psychiatrist, and a social worker. Geriatric clinical services are also provided to nursing homes located in the area such as Sundale and Mapleshire.
We are part of the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute (RNI) and provide state-of-the-science diagnosis, treatment, and research to patients with Alzheimer’s disease, mild cognitive impairment and other age-related progressive memory disorders.
Education
The Division provides an outstanding geriatric learning environment for medical students, and residents. Through didactic education, clinical rotations and opportunities for mentored research, the Division provides trainees with multiple resources to enhance quality of care and develop skills necessary for successful careers as clinician or investigators.
