Global Health Track

Welcome to the WVU Internal Medicine Global Health Track! Our Global Health Track was a new addition to our residency in 2014 that grew out of our already thriving Global Health Program (GHP) for the West Virginia School of Medicine (WVSOM) MD program and WVSOM Tropical Medicine course. This track provides Internal Medicine Residents with the opportunity to participate in and learn about all aspects of Global Health and International Medicine. The purpose of the Global Health Track is to provide additional training and experience in global health to WVU Internal Medicine Residents during their residency.

Track Timeline

Residents that are interested in this program track can apply midway through their PGY-1 year; chosen residents will be good standing both academically and professionally.

PGY-1

  • Apply to Global Heath Track
  • Attend Longitudinal Lecture series
  • Prepare for international rotations

PGY-2

  • Attend Longitudinal Lecture series
  • One-month at international site

PGY-3

  • Attend Longitudinal Lecture series
  • One-month Tropical Medicine course
  • One-month at international site
  • One month of research (OPTIONAL)
  • Present at WVU School of Medicine Global Health Week

Selected residents are expected to actively participate in the lecture series by leading one session per year on a topic or journal article of their choice. The resident will have the opportunity to work closely with several Global Health faculty members during their residency and will be assisted by these same faculty to make Global Health a priority in his or her medical career.

After completion of residency and the tropical medicine course, the physician will be eligible to sit for the tropical medicine board examination.

The Global Health track is rapidly growing both in number of residents and in new sites. WVU’s current international sites include Guatemala, Ghana, Fiji, Paraguay, and Uganda. Based on resident/faculty interest and the ability to secure sustainable partners, more sites will continue to become available. We are tentatively planning for new rotations in India and Pakistan in 2025. 

Lecture Series

Monthly evening lecture with dinner and presentations by the PGY2 and PGY3 residents. The topics will cover Global Health concepts, disease-specific content such as Malaria or HIV in certain locations, and recent journal articles relevant to current concepts such as epidemics and novel management therapies. These lectures are interdisciplinary with faculty and residents from Pediatrics, OB/GYN, Neurology, and Emergency Medicine joining.
