Fiji
The Internal Medicine Global Health Fiji rotation is based out of Pacific Harbour and like our other rotations, incorporates rural health care, similar to that found in Appalachia, working side by side with our Fijian public health outreach teams.
The resident will spend the first week in Navua Hospital, a small community hospital, rotating through outpatient chronic disease clinic, emergency department, inpatient wards, and public health outreach to smaller clinics. The other three weeks are spent traveling to the Namosi Highlands as well as Beqa and Yanutha islands to set up mobile clinics and do health screenings in the schools. Conditions treated include common non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease along with dermatologic conditions and tropical medicine.
The four-week rotation is joined by fourth-year medical students giving the resident the opportunity to continue mentoring while abroad. We partner with Rivers Fiji, a sustainable tourism company that promotes conservation and preservation through socially responsible and environmentally sensitive interaction with people, landscapes, and ecosystems.
