WVU Internal Medicine Rural Scholars Program

Purpose: To recruit future internal medicine physicians who wish to continue their training at the WVU Internal Medicine Residency Program and provide them with the tools to eventually practice in a rural/underserved area in either primary care or a medicine subspecialty.

Who is eligible?

Students in good standing who are enrolled in the WVU School of Medicine MS3 year and who are committed to matching at the WVU Internal Medicine Residency Program in Morgantown, WV. Students should have a sincere interest in practicing in WV or another rural/underserved area upon completion or residency (and fellowship if applicable).

What are the benefits?

  • Students will participate in a rural health curriculum during the MS4 year and transition into the rural health track during residency.
  • Students will receive a $10,000 stipend or tuition credit. Pending successful completion of medical school, students are guaranteed a position in the WVU Internal Medicine Program in Morgantown, WV.
  • Students will save an estimated $9,000 in travel and accommodation costs associated with the residency interview process.

What are the requirements of the Internal Medicine Rural Scholars?

  • Complete the Sub-I rotation in Internal Medicine at the Morgantown Campus.
  • Complete the critical care requirement in Medical Intensive Care Unit at the Morgantown Campus.
  • 4 weeks of elective time must be Internal Medicine or Internal Medicine Subspecialty.
  • 4 week rotation in Rural Community Internal Medicine.
  • Initiation of research or QI project with anticipated completion during residency.
  • Enrollment into the Rural Track of the WVU Internal Medicine Residency.
