Message from the Program Director
PROGRAM DIRECTOR - Brian Kellermeyer, MD
I am honored to be part of the Otolaryngology residency training program at West Virginia University. My mission is to foster an educational, supportive, and inspiring environment that promotes professional development. Alongside me, our faculty are deeply committed to teaching, research, and mentorship throughout the five years of residency, with the goal of producing highly skilled surgeons across all areas of Otolaryngology. Our program offers a diverse training experience supported by subspecialty faculty in every discipline. We emphasize individualized training tailored to each resident’s career goals, including extensive mentorship, educational and research support, and access to external resources when needed to help shape each resident’s unique career path.
Our department and hospital have experienced tremendous growth over the past decade, leading to an increase in our resident complement to four residents per year beginning July 2026. We now have 20 full‑time faculty who are exceptional clinicians and passionate educators, with additional faculty joining in the coming years. Our five‑year categorical program is based primarily in Morgantown, West Virginia, with PGY‑3 rotations at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg, WV (approximately a 45‑minute drive), and elective rural outpatient surgical experiences in Uniontown, PA (also about 45 minutes away) during the PGY‑4 and PGY‑5 years. Our curriculum encompasses all aspects of Otolaryngology. Without fellows at our institution, senior residents have the opportunity to perform advanced procedures—including complex head and neck surgery, skull base surgery, advanced otology and rhinology, facial plastics, among others—enhancing their surgical expertise as they enter comprehensive practice or pursue fellowship training. Our graduates have excelled in community practice, fellowship training, and academic careers.
Training here provides residents and their families with the advantages of small‑town living combined with the opportunities of a major university. Morgantown offers excellent public and private schools, strong athletic programs, and a wide range of arts and cultural activities within a thriving community. It is consistently ranked among the best small cities in the United States and is conveniently located near major metropolitan areas such as Pittsburgh, PA, and Washington, DC.
Our rigorous program has produced superbly trained Otolaryngologists who go on to achieve success in their future practices, fellowships, and academic appointments. We fully support residents who wish to participate in local, regional, national, and international meetings to further their education and represent our department through research presentations. Recently, our residents have matched into prestigious fellowships across nearly all subspecialties, including pediatrics, facial plastics, neurotology, rhinology/skull base surgery, laryngology, and head and neck oncology. We strive to attract individuals who are dedicated, energetic, talented, and disciplined, and we are committed to guiding them toward achieving their career goals—whatever they may be.
