The Section of Pediatric Critical Care is dedicated to providing intensive care services for any child in west Virginia and surrounding states. The completely new and expanded Pediatric Critical Care Unit (PICU) is a 19 bed, multidisciplinary unit at West Virginia University Children's Hospital. There are approximately 750 admissions annually, which includes 150 or more cardiac surgery patients, as well as medical and other surgical admissions (neurosurgery, otolaryngology, orthopedics, etc). All patients requiring intensive care are admitted to the pediatric critical care service or to a surgical service with pediatric co-management. A full spectrum of critical care services is provided. Critical Care at WVU Children’s Hospital is integrated into the academic environment of West Virginia University School of Medicine. The critical care specialist works to direct a comprehensive patient care team that includes pediatric houseofficers, pediatric attendings, surgical houseofficers and attendings, physician assistant, nursing staff, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, dieticians, pharmacists and a pediatric Pharm.D.

The PICU is staffed by five fellowship trained pediatric intensivists who rotate coverage as the attending physician. In addition to the attending physicians, there is a physician assistant and pediatric nurse practitioner who participate in patient care, and acts as a resource for education and quality assurance for housestaff, nurses, and families.

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at West Virginia University is dedicated to providing the most advanced care available to every child in West Virginia and surrounding states. The newly expanded PICU is a shining example of the dedication of this dedication.
