Ophthalmology

Early in life children need to have their eyes regularly checked by their pediatrician or family doctor. Yet, whenever primary care doctors and families have concerns about a child's eyes we like to help.

The Pediatric Ophthalmology Service is led by two pediatric ophthalmologists whose clinic is specifically designed and operated for the benefit of all children who have eye concerns.  We specialize in the full spectrum of eye care needed for all eye conditions that affect infants, toddlers and school-age children.

The WVU Eye Institute offers a special program for school-age children with low vision. We also provide referrals for specialized services to children with low vision through the Children's Vision Rehabilitation Program and the West Virginia Insite Program.

The Children's Vision Rehabilitation Project provides:

  • access to visual devices
  • training for the child, family, and teachers in using the devices
  • continuing support and assessment of the child's progress

West Virginia children with low vision who are enrolled in grades K-12 are eligible for this program.

Our Pediatric Services
Our pediatric ophthalmologists manage eye conditions that can occur throughout childhood. Our services routinely include assessment and treatment for the following:

  • Strabismus (eye misalignments) and amblyopia ("lazy eyes")
  • Blurred vision caused by nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism
  • Retinal diseases, including Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP)
  • Blocked tear ducts in young children
  • Pediatric glaucoma and cataracts
  • Nystagmus
  • Ptosis (droopy eyelids)
  • Eye injuries and infections
  • Various congenital ocular abnormalities
  • Congenital orbital malformations including dermoid cysts and hemangiomas
  • Eye problems associated with genetic syndromes and neurological conditions
  • Eye screening for systemic conditions like juvenile arthritis, diabetes, neurofibromatosis and others.

Additional Services include:

  • Coordinated eye care with all of the other ophthalmology specialties at WVU
  • Pediatric glasses through our optical shop
  • Electroretinography (ERG) testing for specific retinal conditions
  • Low vision care through the CVRP and Insite Programs
  • Visual field (peripheral vision) testing
  • Ocular ultrasound evaluations
  • Ocular coherence tomography (OCT)
  • Ocular photography
