Information for Applicants
Candidates are encouraged to visit the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center and meet our house staff and faculty. Interviews are only arranged after the application is complete and letters of recommendation have been received via ERAS. Interviews are scheduled between November 1 and January 31.
In addition to meeting with the chair, several faculty, and house staff during the visit, candidates are invited to participate in attending rounds and departmental conferences.

Residency Selection Criteria
- Highest priority is given to graduates of LCME-accredited medical schools.
- To be eligible for selection, applicants must apply via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) by December 15th and must enroll in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).
- Our institution sponsors only J-1 visas.
- All applicants must have 3 letters of recommendation.
- All applicants must be within 5 years of graduation from medical school. If longer than 5 years since graduation, we require an explanation of the circumstances which prevented you from completing residency. Each case will be considered individually.
- International applicants are encouraged to have US or Canadian direct patient care activity.
- The selection committee evaluates performance on the USMLE, grades in preclinical or clinical courses, letters of recommendation, communication skills and personal qualities. There is no minimum score requirement for the USMLE Step 1 and 2, but interviews will be offered to candidates with a combined score of >80.
- The Department does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, sexual orientation or veteran status.
- Osteopathic candidates should review the criteria changes since the closure of the Osteopathic track.
Available Positions:
The Categorical Pediatrics Program offers up to 6 PGY1 positions each year. The combined Internal Medicine/Pediatric Residency Program offers up to 4 PGY1 positions each academic year.

Vacation
Residents will be allowed 16 days of vacation/year. No more than 5 days of vacation may be taken from any rotation. No vacation may be taken during the month of December. As per the ACGME Requirements, residents must have a minimum of 16 working days (or 32 half day sessions) in a rotation in order to receive credit for that rotation.
Uniforms and Laundry
The hospital provides uniforms (2 white laboratory jackets with embroidered name and WVU logo) and laundry service.
Parking:
Ample free parking is provided in lots adjacent to the hospital complex.
Resident Library:
In addition to the new, state of the art Learning Center that opened in January 2007, the Residents also have access to material in the Children's Hospital residents' work room. The comfortable area also contains individual work spaces and a 24-hour on-line access to the National Library of Medicine and the Genome Data Base. Files are kept on a wide variety of topics and subjects. Several monthly journals are also kept in the library. The library has 24-hour access to computer based learning in preparation for the board examination.
Book Money:
All residents receive an annual book money stipend. Beginning with the Categorical Pediatric Intern Class of 2011, money will be distributed in the following manner to Categorical Pediatric Residents:
Year 1: $500
Year 2: $500
Year 3: $2000 which can only be used for the registration fee for the American Board of Pediatrics Certifying
Examination. Registration occurs during Year 3.
Educational Meetings:
In order to encourage residents to submit posters, articles, abstracts, and projects to national meetings, the program will provide a one-time reimbursement for presentation of same at a state, regional, or national meeting up to $750 for hotel, meals, registration, and/or transportation. Professional conferences and meetings must be approved by the Program Director and the Department Chair.
Other Benefits:
Additional benefits include the use of University weight rooms, gymnasium, indoor and outdoor jogging tracks, indoor swimming pool, racquetball, squash, and tennis courts.
On campus child care is available for residents with small children. There is a waiting list for this service, so apply early.
A cafeteria card is provided for meals when on call.
Residents also have access to the WVU Fitness/Recreation Center, and an opportunity for discount on cell phones, and computer financing.
