History

The Department of Surgery at West Virginia University has been delivering excellence in patient care since its founding in 1960. With steady growth since that time, both in the number of patients treated and in the complexity of the care provided, WVU has developed into a major tertiary referral center for the state and region.

Not only do West Virginians no longer have to leave the state to receive state-of-the-art medical and surgical care; in fact, increasing numbers of patients are coming from around the region, nation, and internationally to receive specialized care from WVU surgeons and other subspecialists.

An institution-wide commitment to multidisciplinary care has led to innovative collaborative efforts that bring specialists from different departments within the University together for the benefit of patients.

The Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center, Jon Michael Moore Trauma Center, and other specialized centers within the Health Sciences Center enable surgeons to work closely with other highly-trained specialists in a team approach.

High-tech tools, such as 3-T MRI and computer guided surgical navigation systems, provide state-of-the-art diagnostic capabilities. West Virginia University Hospitals da Vinci® Surgical System will give our surgeons more minimally invasive options for a variety of endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures. The robotic device can be used in 100 different types of surgical procedures within the cardiac, general, gynecological and urological specialties.

Department of Surgery faculty members are active in education, research, and outreach, adding to the body of medical knowledge, training future surgeons, and contributing to the continuous improvement of surgical care. WVU Department of Surgery faculty members, in every sense of the word, are at the leading edge of their fields.

Our faculty specialists work together to enhance the delivery of superb patient care. The spirit of partnership and passion for excellence is extended to the referring physicians, patients and their families. We foster a leadership role by promoting a culture of quality in the education of students and residents in training. Research at the student, resident, and faculty level is encouraged successfully. We strive to combine our expertise with continued improvements to provide a full spectrum of academic surgical medicine.
