Education
The Department of Surgery at West Virginia University is dedicated to the education of medical students, residents, fellows, ancillary staff, and community. We are committed to evolving an environment where all interested faculty and related staff have an opportunity to contribute and grow as teachers, mentors, learners, educators, researchers and administrators. We want our faculty, education staff, and learners to feel respected, treated fairly, listened to, and accountable for the quality of the educational programs we administer. Our aim is to provide a positive and supportive environment where individuals, regardless of level, are properly challenged to achieve their maximum potential personally and professionally.
We continue to evolve programming for medical students as we are keenly interested in cultivating the surgeons of the future. Resident programming is central to our mission and includes a robust general surgery residency program and an exciting, new integrated plastic surgery residency program. Please investigate our individual programs for more information and how we can facilitate your experience in surgical education.
Academic Activity
The Department of Surgery at West Virginia University recognizes that research is an important component of its overall mission. The Departments seeks to combine our strengths with ongoing studies of clinical relevance across the campus. Research and scientific inquiry are essential components of resident education and professional development, and residents are encouraged to participate in a variety of projects throughout their tenure. Success is cultivated through mentorship relationships with associated faculty in the Department. These projects result in presentations at regional and national forums and ultimate peer reviewed publication.
