On behalf of the entire faculty in the Department of Surgery at West Virginia University, we welcome you to our General Surgery Residency Program home page.  We are very proud of our program.  Here are some highlights:

  • 5 year training program with 5 categorical positions per year and 5 preliminary PGY1 positions
    • Secured funding for select residents to participate in dedicated research time (1-2 years)
    • Limited fellowship programs
  • Graduates pursue general surgery practice or competitive fellowships
  • Nearly all clinical rotations at W. Ruby Memorial Hospital and WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital on the Morgantown campus with 850 beds
    • 1 month as PGY3 (transplant) at Baylor, Scott and White Health in Dallas, TX
    • 1 month as PGY4 (rural rotation) at WVU Medicine Jefferson Medical Center in Ranson, WV
    • ACS verified Level 1 adult trauma center, Level 2 pediatric trauma center
    • Plans underway for building of Hazel Ruby McQuain Comprehensive Cancer Hospital
  • Wednesday morning didactics
  • Multiple courses integrated into training and opportunity for exemplary residents to be instructors: ATLS, FCCS, ASSET, RTTDC
  • Additional perks: established mentorship program, institutional member of Association of Women Surgeons, funded loupes, educational stipend, financial support for academic meetings and presentations, free parking
