Resident Life

Welcome to the WVU General Surgery Resident Life page! If you are here then you must be interested in what WVU has to offer.  While other parts of our website will show off all we have to offer from case numbers and rotations, to the Fresh Tissue Training Program, we hope this portion of the website will give you an idea of what living in Morgantown and West Virginia is like.

Time outside the hospital is valuable as a resident and we think it is important for you to know what our program has to offer. From program-organized wellness events to dining and recreational options around the community, Morgantown and the surrounding area has much to offer.

We always have a monthly social event outside the hospital organized by the residents.  Examples of these include a whitewater rafting trip, visiting the West Virginia Wine and Jazz Festival, zip lining, resident tailgates, an annual Resident Christmas party and attending Fright Farm, just to name a few. Other wellness perks provided by the program include breakfast every week for M&M from Panera, lunch for the monthly resident meeting, lifetime hospital gym access for just $10, free provided parking right next to the hospital and football stadium.

Living in Morgantown is the perfect combination of small town vibes and metropolitan amenities. The Morgantown food scene is thriving. From fine dining to local craft breweries, and Appalachian cuisine.  Grab some wings and a fishbowl at the Morgantown establishment Mario’s Fishbowl or amazing salads and pastries at Terra Cafe after your walk on the rail trail. These are just a few examples and there is so much more to try from craft pizza, to some of the most unique burritos around.

The outdoor scene around Morgantown might be the greatest perk of all. Great hiking is just a 10 minute drive outside of town to Coopers Rock state park and Snake Hill. Another two hours and you can be in the Dolly Sods Wilderness, the highest plateau east of the Mississippi. Black Water Falls State Park is just a short drive away and offers amazing views and hiking as well. When visiting Dolly Sods or the Blackwater, make sure to stop in Thomas and Davis, two neighboring towns with plenty to do. When winter comes there several great ski resorts within a 3 hour drive including Snowshoe Mountain Resort.

When we have a weekend off and want to get out of town, it is an easy drive to Pittsburgh (1 hour), Cleveland & Washington DC (3 hours).  With the Pittsburgh International Airport just an hour away as well, flying anywhere is a breeze. There is so much more that we could talk about, but we think you get the picture.  We hope this gives you a glimpse of what it is like to live in Morgantown.

Sincerely,

WVU General Surgery Residents
