Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Externship

The Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Summer Externship is offered to rising 2nd year medical students interested in a career in trauma surgery.  The externship provides hands-on experience within the multidisciplinary team.  Externs will become part of the team actively participating in the OR, SICU, and clinical settings, gaining knowledge and skills on critical care management of patients.  The externship is offered in (2) 3-week sessions during the summer months of June/July.  There is no stipend for this externship.

Responsibilities

The student will be assigned to a team of physicians. They will assume the role of observer and be included in all aspects of the daily workings of a trauma and acute care surgery team at a Level 1 referral center. The student will be issued a trauma pager. The student will be included in as much of the service as possible, with the opportunity to take call on occasion if desired. The student will have the opportunity to observe work in the trauma bay, Intensive Care Unit, and operating room. The student will be required to complete HIPPA and all other applicable training required by the WVU School of Medicine and Hospital, if not already complete.
