Critical Care
The faculty of the department of critical care at West Virginia University’s Charleston campus are committed to providing the best possible comprehensive care for patients with critical illness in Charleston and surrounding communities, and educating tomorrow’s leaders in the field of critical care medicine.
Our critical care faculty are specialists who are highly skilled in serving patients with a wide variety of life-threatening conditions using state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and advanced treatments in line with the latest evidenced-based practices.
With these resources, it is also our mission to train future generations to be outstanding clinicians. The full spectrum of ICU services is provided by specialty-trained physicians in a state-of-the-art setting housed at Charleston Area Medical Center providing dedicated, continuous care to critically ill, hospitalized patients for problems such as:
- Respiratory failure including Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)
- Infectious conditions, such as Sepsis and septic shock
- Acute Renal Failure, providing dialysis if necessary
- Complex Critical Illness with Multisystem organ failure
- Acute Heart Failure, including cardiogenic shock and myocardial infarction
- Advanced Post-Cardiopulmonary resuscitation care, providing therapeutic hypothermia if necessary
- Postoperative critical care management including cardiothoracic surgery
