Clinical Track Alumni
Danielle Combs, MS
Exercise Physiologist, WVU Medicine
"My dream was to go into Cardiac Rehab once I entered college. I was recently hired at Ruby Memorial in their Cardiac Rehab department 8 months after graduation as an Exercise Specialist. The Exercise Physiology Master's program provided me with the knowledge to work with these cardiac patients, who also have many other disease processes. Interval training is something specific I have started with our patients and they are loving it. Without this program I wouldn't have even thought about administering an interval training program for cardiac patients. All of these skills I acquired from the Exercise Physiology MS program have helped me transition smoothly into the work field. Now after only a year and a half I have been promoted to Exercise Physiologist in our department."
Miriam E. Leary, PhD, RCEP
Assistant Professor, Division of Exercise Physiology, WVU
"The Exercise Physiology master’s program clinical track is unrivaled and affords an exceptionally rewarding experience both in education and training. Perhaps the best part of the program was the mentoring I received from the renowned faculty who were clearly invested in my development as a scientist and professional. The opportunity to work and interact with a variety of special populations gave me applied experience in a setting that prioritized education and training. This exposure, combined with lecture and laboratory classes, successfully prepared me to pursue a variety of allied health, research, and academic professions."
Kent Marshall, BS, MS
MD/PhD Student, WVU
"The Master of Science in Exercise Physiology Clinical Track at WVU...has set me up for success in my planned future schooling and career in many ways. The advanced didactic coursework has led to a wide breadth of functional and practical knowledge in both normal and abnormal human physiology. Furthermore, the curriculum is...on par with higher-level professional programs such as MD, PharmD and DDS curricula...The clinical rotations in the Cardiology and Pulmonology departments at Ruby Memorial Hospital were very intriguing and stimulating, and allowed us to think critically and be exposed to medical procedures."

James Alex Smith, MS
PhD Student, Nutrition & Exercise Physiology, University of Missouri
"The Thesis Track Master's Program in Exercise Physiology at WVU gave me a strong background and foundation in exercise physiology and human functioning. Additionally, being in the thesis track, I was exposed to a wide array of research techniques, theories, and applications. The 2-year program gave me the necessary skills and confidence to be competitive for subsequent degrees. Whether your goal is med school, PT/OT school, or a PhD program, this 2-year master's degree at WVU can help prepare you for your future endeavors and be a competitive student."
Brian K. Leary, MS, PhD
Assistant Professor, Division of Exercise Physiology, WVU
"The Thesis track exposed me to clinical exercise physiology, the basic sciences, and biomechanics which afforded me a strong foundation in a variety of sciences before moving on for my doctorate. The weekly seminars were critical in my development as a researcher by introducing me to the importance of research methodologies and practices in a friendly and supportive environment. These experiences set a strong foundation for my future as a researcher and academic by integrating key areas of exercise science research. The faculty on the thesis track are invested not only in my research and educational development, but also in my personal development. This mentoring extended past my time in the program into my current academic and professional career and has been exceptionally rewarding."
