Perioperative Medicine
The perioperative medicine rotation is a block-long experience that is a combination of inpatient and ambulatory Othopaedic Perioperative Care and takes place at WVU Medicine’s flagship hospital, Ruby Memorial Hospital and the outpatient University Town Centre clinic. Ruby Memorial Hospital is a 690 bed academic medical center is also home to the John Michael Moore Trauma Center a Level 1 adult and Level 2 pediatric trauma center.
In the ambulatory setting, residents will gain experience understanding the difference between risk assessment and optimization and appropriate scenarios for both; understand and utilize multiple perioperative risk scores in evaluation of patient; understand and utilize American College of Cardiology recommendations of cardiac risk assessment and workup in reducing Major Adverse Cardiac Event risk; have knowledge of ASA classifications and be able to assign patient to appropriate class; and demonstrate the ability to discuss surgical concerns with surgical team with goal of improving patient care.
In the inpatient setting, residents will demonstrate the ability to co-manage patients with surgical team; understand and utilize the principles of restrictive blood transfusion rationale and how it applies to perioperative patients; demonstrate ability to translate ambulatory plan to inpatient management; demonstrate ability to work with Case management and Social work for discharge planning and improved follow up, demonstrate understanding of common acute postoperative complications and appropriate management for stabilization, and develop a knowledge of inpatient resources available for inpatient pain management
