Student Expectations
Program Requirements
Students completing the Bachelor of Science (BS) in immunology and medical microbiology must complete the General Education Foundations (GEF), prerequisite, and major requirements as outlined in the West Virginia University Academic Catalog. Each student will have a personalized plan of study located in DegreeWorks, including any previously-completed college coursework that is approved as transfer credit.
To be eligible for graduation, students must:
- Maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 or greater in all coursework attempted.
- Students who do not maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 or greater will be placed on probation for one semester. Students on probation who do not raise their cumulative GPA to 2.75 or greater after one semester will be dismissed from the program.
- Pass all required courses for the major with a grade of C or better.
- A student who receives a grade of D, F, U, or W in a required Immunology and Medical Microbiology program core course may repeat that course once and must earn a grade of C or better. A student may repeat only one core course. Students who repeat an Immunology and Medical Microbiology Program core course and earn a grade of D, F, U, or W will be dismissed from the program.
- The BS in Immunology and Medical Microbiology requires a minimum of 45 hours to a maximum of 49 hours in Immunology and Medical Microbiology required courses. A minimum of 128 total hours is required for graduation, however, in some instances the total number of earned credit hours may exceed this total depending on the electives chosen.
Mid-Year Academy
Students with a grade point average (GPA) below 2.0 at the end of a given fall semester will be placed on academic probation for the following spring semester. Students placed on probation must raise their overall GPA to at least a 2.0 be to removed from probation.
In addition, Immunology and Medical Microbiology requires students to have an overall GPA of 2.75 to remain in good standing in the program. Students falling below this standard may be dismissed from the program.
In order to provide assistance with returning to satisfactory academic standing, freshman placed on Academic Probation (AP) at the end of a given fall semester must complete the following requirements:
- Meet with Alex Tylka for:
- Mid-Year Academy which includes schedule adjustments and completion of an Academic Probation contract (January)
- One additional session during the spring semester
- Consultation prior to making any schedule adjustments
- Meet with your assigned success coach twice a month
