Diabetes Fellowship

West Virginia is one of the states in the “diabetes belt”. More than 1 in 10 adults in West Virginia have diabetes mellitus, ranking West Virginia as the 2^nd highest state affected by this disease. Most specialists who treat diabetes are endocrinologists. However, there is a significant shortage of endocrinologists in the United States, therefore, a large proportion of diabetes management is performed by primary care providers.  

To better care for our patients with diabetes and to better educate physicians to care for this growing, complex patient population, the West Virginia Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism has developed a one-year clinical diabetes fellowship for primary care physicians. This innovative program is one of a few in the country and is open to physicians who have successfully completed their training in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or Internal Medicine/Pediatrics (Med/Peds).

This fellowship includes training in:

· All types of diabetes including type 1, type 2, LADA, MODY, pancreoprivic, and cystic-fibrosis-related diabetes

· Nutrition and obesity medicine

· Pediatric diabetes

· Diabetic foot and wound care

· Inpatient diabetes management including complex diabetes such as steroid-induced hyperglycemia, insulin use with TPN and tube feeds, insulin pumps, post-bariatric surgery glucose management, diabetic ketoacidosis, hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state, and more

· Gestational diabetes

· Cardiometabolic disease

· Insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitor (CGM) interpretation

· Diabetes group visits
