Curriculum

Clinical rotations include multiple outpatient clinics in addition to inpatient endocrinology consult experiences.

Training Location

Fellowship training will largely take place in Ruby Memorial Hospital and Adult Endocrinology clinics at the Suncrest Towne Centre and Cheat Lake Physicians Office with rotations in other clinics including the Physician Office Center (Medical Weight Management, Pediatric Endocrinology, High-Risk OB, and Podiatry) and optional rural endocrinology rotations at the Fairmont Gateway Clinic or Waynesburg Office.

Training Overview

The fellow spends approximately 10 weeks of the academic year on our busy inpatient consult service. On the consulting team, the fellow will work amongst our team of endocrine fellows, residents, nurse practitioners, medical students, and diabetes educators under the supervision of the endocrinology faculty.

This fellowship includes training in:

  • All types of diabetes including type I, type II, LADA, MODY, pancreoprivic, and cystic-fibrosis-related diabetes
  • Nutrition and obesity medicine
  • Pediatric diabetes
  • Diabetic foot and wound care
  • Inpatient diabetes management including complex diabetes such as steroid-induced hyperglycemia, insulin use with TPN and tube feeds, insulin pumps, post-bariatric surgery glucose management, diabetic ketoacidosis, hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state, and more
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Cardiometabolic disease
  • Insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitor (CGM) interpretation
  • Diabetes group visits

Didactics

Didactics will include a monthly diabetes lecture series, weekly endocrinology grand rounds, journal clubs, and participation in every other year's endocrinology/diabetes conferences and/or annual Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF One) walk. Diabetes fellows are expected to make two formal presentations for endocrine grand rounds, present journal clubs on recent diabetes articles, and are encouraged to submit QI/abstracts to the ADA, AACE, Endocrine Society, or WVU research day.
