Welcome to the Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases Fellowship!

The Obesity Medicine Fellowship is a one-year program that accepts one fellow each year. The fellow spends at least 50% of their time providing clinical care in adult ambulatory obesity medicine supervised by board-certified obesity medicine specialists. Fellowship faculty are well-known academic physicians who serve on national committees and are frequently sought out for media engagements and national presentations.  Elective time offers broad exposure based on the fellow’s interests and may include bariatric endoscopy, endocrinology, bariatric surgery, sleep medicine, hepatology, bariatric psychology, lipidology, and/or exercise physiology. The time devoted to pediatric obesity medicine training can be increased if desired by the fellow.

As part of an academic medical center, our fellowship meets the rigorous standards set by the institution’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) office, which provides oversight and ensures full compliance with institutional training requirements. We are proud to report that our program has consistently met these standards and maintains a 100% board pass rate in Obesity Medicine.

Fellows are encouraged to engage in scholarly activities, such as publishing in peer-reviewed journals and presenting oral or poster abstracts at regional or national conferences. The program supports attendance at one required professional meeting per year. Our fellows have a history of high scholarly productivity. In addition to participation in scheduled team meetings, case conferences, journal clubs, and quality improvement meetings, fellows are encouraged to give educational lectures and engage in advocacy efforts.

A unique feature of our fellowship is the opportunity for fellows to tailor their scholarly focus. Fellows may choose to concentrate on research, quality improvement, and/or medical informatics. Those interested in research may participate in the CTSI Fellows Research Academy. Alternatively, fellows may opt to work longitudinally with our medical informatics team and pursue Epic Physician Builder certification. All fellows will have the opportunity to complete a medical informatics elective, gaining valuable skills in using the electronic health record to enhance the quality of obesity care.
