We are so excited to share our program with you. The Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at West Virginia University is ACGME-accredited one-year program that takes 1 fellow per year. Our mission is to train and support clinicians to become outstanding leaders in service, education, and research in the field of geriatric medicine. The Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program aims to provide excellent clinical education, research education, mentorship, and access to a variety of practice settings for the fellows.

West Virginia is the only state that resides entirely within the Appalachian region. This provides a unique and rich training opportunity for our fellows. The state’s population of approximately 1.8 million is exceedingly rural with a growing elderly population, poor socioeconomic status, and low educational attainment. The need for geriatric medicine in this population is great.

The primary teaching site is West Virginia University Hospital, a 690 bed state of the art facility. WVUH is a quaternary referral center for West Virginia and provides care for patients from western Maryland and southwestern Pennsylvania. Services at WVUH include two MICU services, a Neurocritical Care service, Trauma/Surgical ICU, a Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, and Cardiovascular ICU. The Geriatric Medicine service works closely with Trauma Medicine, Surgical Intensive Care, Behavioral Medicine, Neurology, and Hospitalist Medicine to provide care for geriatric patients with geriatric syndromes, trauma, and dementia.  Geriatric Medicine clinics are held at the University Town Center.  Additionally, the outpatient Memory Clinic operates closely in conjunction with the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute to provide outpatient care and participate in cutting-edge research in neurologic diseases and dementia.  Geriatric services, including specialized Geriatric Psychiatry, is provided in multiple community Long Term Care facilities in order to deliver comprehensive, interdisciplinary geriatric care.

Outdoor activities include skiing, hiking, boating, rock climbing, mountain biking, and so much more. We are also conveniently located 1 hour from Pittsburgh and 3 hours from Washington D.C.
