Ghana

The Internal Medicine Global Health Ghana rotation is based out of Nalerigu, a rural town in the northeast corner of the country. This rotation incorporates inpatient and outpatient health care in the busy Baptist Medical Center.

The resident spends time providing hands-on care through daily rounds on the women’s and men’s wards, and maternity and pediatric if assistance is needed by the local Ghanaian medical officers. Following rounds, clinic is held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, procedures that were not considered urgent on clinic days are performed, ranging from lumbar punctures to paracenteses.

The resident is challenged to provide the best medical care for a wide variety of diseases and illnesses from snake bites to Hepatitis B and C to hypertension.

The four-week rotation is joined by fourth-year medical students giving the resident the opportunity to continue mentoring while abroad. This rotation also includes numerous opportunities for point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS).
