Paraguay

The Internal Medicine Global Health Paraguay rotation is based out of San Lorenzo, Paraguay (a suburb that is part of metropolitan Asunción) at the Hospital Clinicas, part of the National University of Asunción (UNA).

The resident spends time rotating with local teams at this large safety net referral hospital, with a diverse selection of specialty and subspecialty services. Residents and students will participate in the daily patient care and procedures, as well as be able to experience medical education through participating in grand rounds and case conferences with their Paraguayan colleagues.

Medical students from WVU had been rotating in Paraguay for several years, but following a 2-week pilot trip with residents in 2022, we plan on a 4-week rotation going forward and are examining the possibility of including 2 weeks at a more rural hospital campus that is operated by UNA.

Due to our longstanding partnership with UNA, this rotation provides a unique possibility for a two-way exchange of students, residents, and attendings. As our relationship continues to strengthen, there will be opportunities for collaborative QI projects and clinical research.
