Professional Qualities

Each student must demonstrate, to the satisfaction of their supervisor(s), the following professional behaviors and competencies:

  • The ability and willingness to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals, demonstrating respect for their roles and expertise while effectively giving and receiving feedback to support the successful functioning of the healthcare team.

  • The ability to communicate effectively with patients and their families, explaining diagnoses, recommendations, and treatment plans in a manner that is understandable and appropriate for each individual.

  • Respect for patients’ rights to privacy, confidentiality, and dignity.

  • Sensitivity to the cultural, sexual, moral, ethical, and religious values of patients and their families, with an understanding of patients’ unique psychological needs and the ability to provide compassionate and supportive care, including during terminal illness.

  • An appreciation and understanding of the ethical and legal principles relevant to surgical practice.

  • Demonstration of honesty, reliability, professionalism, and respect when interacting with patients, families, colleagues, and all members of the healthcare team.

  • Commitment to lifelong learning through continued self-directed education and the appropriate application of current medical knowledge to clinical practice.
