Student Assessment

Student performance will be assessed through multiple components including:

  • Student performance evaluations completed by resident and faculty – 40% of grade
  • Midterm examination – 10% of grade
  • OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) – 20% of grade
  • NBME Surgery Subject Examination (Shelf Exam) – 30% of grade

Honors

The West Virginia School of Medicine reserves Honors designation for the top 15% of students.  To ensure a fair and equitable process, Honors are determined at the conclusion of the academic year after all clerkships have been completed.  At that time, the highest-performing students will be notified of this designation, representing 15% of the student cohort.

If you have any questions regarding this policy, questions can be directed to the clerkship director.

Unsatisfactory Mark (Failure)

An unsatisfactory mark in the Surgery Clerkship will be assigned if a student meets any of the following:

  • A final clerkship grade of less than 70%
  • A score at or below the 11th percentile on the NBME Surgery Shelf Examination
  • Academic or professional misconduct as defined by the West Virginia School of Medicine Academic and Professional Standards Committee.

*An unsatisfactory mark may result in the student repeating the entire Surgical Clerkship.  Additional remediation requirements will be determined in accordance with the School of Medicine policies and at the recommendation of the Committee on Academic and Professional Standards.
