Excellence in Promoting Inclusion and Cultural Diversity Award

The Award for Excellence in Promoting Inclusion and Cultural Diversity honors WVU School of Medicine alumni “whose actions, examples and efforts contribute to a respectful and supportive environment for everyone.” The award was established in 2021 by the Executive Council of the West Virginia University School of Medicine Alumni Association. Selection is made by the WVU School of Medicine Alumni Awards Committee.

Award criteria: 

A candidate must be a living graduate (MD, PhD, or MD/PhD), resident or fellow of the West Virginia University School of Medicine regional campuses who exemplify cultural competency by embracing people regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, nationality, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, disability, age or political perspective. He/she actively demonstrates and promotes fairness, impartiality, and justice in all aspects of his/her work and life with an outcome that all people they encounter feel respected, supported, safe, and welcomed in our environment. This award may honor a single outstanding accomplishment or a lifetime of merit.

Nomination process and deadline: 

The required nomination form is posted online at medicine.hsc.wvu.edu/alumni. Nominations will be accepted from alumni, faculty, staff, students, residents, and fellows associated with the WVU School of Medicine until January 31.

  1. Complete the following:
    • Required nomination form
    • One nomination letter focusing on the nominee’s impact upon others
    • Nominee’s abbreviated curriculum vitae (limit 5 pages)
    • Additional letters of recommendation are suggested (maximum of 5), but not required.
  2. Submit information – online submission preferred. Option: Submit answers to the nomination questions as a Word document or PDF via email to the Alumni Office at alumni@hsc.wvu.edu
  1. Incomplete or late nominations received after the deadline will not be considered for this year and will be automatically saved for review during the next year.
  2. Nominations will be kept and reviewed for a period of 3 years.
  3. Updated materials may be requested by the Awards Committee.
  4. Self-nominations will not be accepted.
  5. All decisions by the awards committee are final.

Notification:

Recipient/s will be notified by the chair of the Awards Committee and honored at the School of Medicine Dean’s Awards for Excellence event.
